It is with my sculpture that I literally work with the Earth to bring forth art. Both the words human and humor call to mind the word humus, soil or earth. All three words combine in the pieces I create. People crawling out of frames, people bathing in the earth, a dog with his head outside the car window, enjoying a ride, these are the characters that appear as my fingers push the clay around. My sculpted figures delight in their humanity (except for the dogs who delight in their dogginess), they struggle to escape the framed constraints that we all feel, and they are depicted with humor because when we approach life with humor, we are well grounded. |
